Crown Beach

Crown Beach is where Alameda goes to look at the City. Two and a half miles of sand on the Bay, dunes along the bike path, windsurfers and kiteboarders on the water, San Francisco across it. Take the long way home along Shoreline.

Our Crown Beach posters and tees catch it at sundown: a low winter sun over the Bay, and the skyline black against an orange sky. Designed in Alameda, printed when you order.

The place

  • The beach is 2.5 miles long, with sand dunes along a bike path.
  • It's named for Robert W. Crown, the state assemblyman who campaigned to keep it public parkland. It took his name in 1974.
  • In early 1982 the eroded beach was rebuilt with sand from the Bay, pumped ashore by pipeline from a barge.
  • Crab Cove, at the foot of McKay Avenue, was designated the first California estuarine marine reserve. All plant and animal life there is protected.
  • Neptune Beach, the amusement park called the "Coney Island of the West," opened in 1917 with a roller coaster, a carnival midway and a swimming pool. It stretched along Central Avenue to McKay Avenue, the street that leads to Crab Cove today.
